Well, if we want to know how Itireleng Primary School was established and why the school is the way it is today then we must study its past so as to understand its present status. Before presenting the history of this school, Let us discuss the 4 important benefits of this reliable historical information found in our archives.
It was in 1964 when blacks were forcedly removed in places like Sonderwater in Cullinan to stay in Temba Township which was established 1948. The present school was built in 1968 and at that time it was known as Mmabolepo Higher Primary School. Mmabolepo was the name from the royal house of Amandebele-A-Lebelo under Kekana chieftainship in Majaneng (Hammanskraal).
The first principal of the school was Mr Thabo Edwin Tsiane who was appointed in 1986. He started this school with only two teachers namely Mrs Mosaka (retired) and Mrs Setshedi (deceased). The Mmabolepo Higher Primary in its first years only had 55 learners which were in Std 3 (Grade 5) and Std 6 (Grade 8) the three of them were musically inclined and this was known as a music school and its drum majorettes. The name Mmabolepo Higher Primary was changed to the present Itireleng Primary School, Mr Tsiane left teaching in March 1975 to pursue the business sector and the school had already grown from 3 to 10 staff members.
The second principal Mr Monnakgotla (deceased) was appointed in April 1975, during that period the homeland system was still in process. In October 1977 Bophuthatswana became independent and Itireleng primary was under the Bop Department of Education. The problems they experienced during that time was the shortage of classrooms as the number of pupils was highly increasing, some of the classrooms had to go out of the school yard and teaching took place at the neighbouring Methodist Church. The school had no fence and it was continuously vandalized. The principal Mr Monnakgotla and the staff decided to cook pottjie Kos and sell it to the learners in order to raise funds and the project became a success.
At that time the school had three small offices which were occupied by the principal and vice principal .The third office was used as storage and teachers had no staff room. Music and drum majorettes continued to be the most important activities at this school. During that time education was politicised and every school was forced to teach Setswana and other African languages were scrapped .Amandebele-A-Lebelo schools were closed down by the Bophuthatswana Government and all permanent teachers were seconded to other schools in the Temba Township .Itireleng Primary was the std 6 external examination marking centre for Temba schools .Mr. Monnakgotla served then department as principal of Itireleng from April 1975 until he retired in February 1986.
The third principal was Mr Tlhokoe (deceased) was appointed in June 1986, the Bophuthatswana Department of Education started to introduce the system of promotional posts for Heads of Departments in schools and Mr Tabane was the first teacher who occupied that post, by that time the Bop Department of Education had scrapped the Std 5 & 6 (Grade 7& 8) in primaries and introduced middle schools, Itireleng Primary School was left with Sub A-Std 5. The new Education System PEUP was introduced during that time of Principal Mr Tlhokoe who then retired in December 1993.
The Lady Mrs R.W. Danke was appointed in February 1994 as the fourth principal of Itireleng Primary School with only 15 staff members and 556 learners. Only 10 classrooms were available and the system of using the neighbouring church to accommodate Grade 4 learners (90) continued until the year 1999.
